Lace Edged Cushion

To make lace edged cushion you will need to make a basic cushion first.

To make the basic cushion cut out two same size squares and line them together (inside out). Using the sewing machine stitch the squares together (remember 1cm allowance) leaving the gap on one of the sides.

Invert the cushion and fill it with polyester fibre or other suitable material. Close the gap by stitching the edges together. Ladder stitch is the best to use as it is invisible.

For the crochet part of the project you will need cotton lace yarn and 4 (1mm) size crochet hook.

Important note: familiarise  yourself with the chart symbols and abbreviations as the ones used here are continental.

Follow the diagram to crochet around the pillow (click on the image to enlarge).

1st row: Instead of doing a starting chain, crochet a row of single crochet stitches, evenly spaced , crocheted directly into the edges of the pillow. Make sure that the number of stitches on each pillow side divides by 10 (eg: 90, 100 or 110 stitches on each edge)

2nd row: work 3 chain stitches, dc on 5th sc (first row), work 3 chain stitches, dc on 5th sc (first row) again, work 3 chain stitches, dc on 5th sc (first row) third time, work 3 chain stitches and slip stitch on 10th sc (first row). Repeat this to finish the row. by starting with 3 chain stitches instead of 4 chain stitches each time. Make sure that you slip stitch on the corners of the pillow.

3rd row: work 2 chain stitches, 2dc on 1st chain stitch (second row), work 3 chain stitches, dc on 4th chain stitch (second row), dc on 5th chain stitch (second row), dc on 6th chain stitch (second row), work 3 chain stitches, slip stitch on 2nd dc (second row), work 3 chain stitches, dc on 7th chain stitch (second row), dc on 8th chain stitch (second row), dc on 9th chain stitch (second row), work 3 chain stitches, dc on 2nd slip stitch (second row). Repeat this to finish the row by skipping 2 chain stitches and 2dc each time. Work 3dc on the corners instead of 1dc.
