Year two with books: “French Kids Eat Everything” Review

My thoughts on "French Kids Eat Everything" bookI finished reading this book last month just in time for Lukas to start solids. And how is that going you may say? Well, Lukas turned out to be a very independent eater and very messy one. Sometimes I feel like dropping off some food at his table and running far far away, because I can’t cope seeing him putting the food all over his clothes, hair and face and floor and whatever he can reach. This was certainly not how I planned! When I decided to start weaning Lukas, I had a very clear plan to begin with purees. You see I was quite inspired by the French method to introduce new tastes gradually, which is adding veg purees to their milk (read this in the book). Since I am breastfeeding I have lovingly made all types of milkshakes and froze them into cubes (it was too precious to waste even a drop). That included beetroot, courgette, carrot, spinach all steamed and whizzed in the food processor so I could save all the nutrients. So you can imagine my disappointment when Lukas simply refused to be fed by spoon! He was grabbing the spoon instead and dashing all the contents of it on the floor. At the end I gave in and now I let him feed himself with finger foods which apparently is called “baby led weaning” (never liked the title, baby leading?). At least it seems it is going somewhere although I am really holding on to other “rules” that I learned in this book.

What I like about it? Well… this book is very similar to the previous book I read. Both make an observation on French parenting that is very very similar even though the authors are different and the places they lived in France are different! However Karen Le Billon have focused here on food. And who would argue, French do seem to have a really strong food culture going. So its good to know what French do to help their kids to learn to love food. It was an interesting read and my favourite “rule” was how you should not give up and keep offering (not forcing) different types of foods to your child and not presuming that they just don’t like it. It just makes sense that kids at young age have not developed tastes therefore they are still mouldable. That’s good news right?

What I did not like about it? Since I read two books about a very similar subject, I will say I prefer Pamela Druckerman’s book. First of all she had more chic in her writing. Not too sure if it’s because she lived in Paris, unlike Karen Le Billon who lived in countryside. I think Karen herself must have a bit stricter, more controlled personality, because she turned her observations about French parenting into rules which made the book not as fun to read. Pamela on other hand made it sound all very simple.

Is is worth buying it? I would say yes, but if I did it again I think I would rather read “French Children Don’t Throw Food” first. My thoughts on "French Kids Eat Everything" bookHope you find this useful :-)

Photography challenge: shutter speed to capture motion

captured with sports auto setting (no blur in moving objects) When I was searching how to use speed shutter I came across many beautiful pictures like these on Pinterest, which inspired me to do photography focused on motion. Although shutter speed is meant to control the light that comes through the lens it seem that it is often used to capture the moment in very artistic way.

To experiment with shutter speed I chose Lukas as my model since he became a very active boy. I imagined I could achieve a very similar effect in my photography too. Little did I know there were few problems with this. First, I could not stay still with my camera making the whole image blurry. Second (not as crucial), Lukas turned out to be not active enough to create that dramatic shot. However the pic bellow is my favourite, because it shows that I am capable to take a photo of motion. As you may see the parts that are not moving (like the beads on his tummy) aren’t blurred, while his hands and legs in particular are blurry and feathery… aww!1/8 shutter speedSo what did I do to achieve this look? Well, I set the shutter to very slow, it being open for 1/8 of a second (I know! that sounds very fast in fact). But what happens if I set a faster shutter speed? The answer is that because the shutter is open for short time there is not a lot of light coming through, therefore it causes the picture being very dark like this one bellow (which been set for 1/60 of a second).1/60 shutter speed I edited the light of the dark picture to see how it came out. I think it looks very clear without any movement fuzz, although I can see some graininess in it. Thank goodness you can actually use other camera settings to make the picture lighter! I will certainly be exploring these options some time in the future. 1/60 shutter speed (edited)The shutter speed for the pic bellow have been set to 1/15 of a second. It all seem sightly blur to me because my hand been shaking as I was holding both Lukas hand and the camera.1/15 shutter speedAnd here is a similar picture with 1/80 shutter speed!1/80 shutter speedAnd same settings for the pictures bellow. Although this came out slightly better as it is little feathery on Lukas left leg.1/13 shutter speed 1/80 shutter speedI hope it all made sense to you ;-)

Sugar free April

Sugar free banana pancakesSo here is, the end of sugar free (almost) March! It was a great success even though I indulged in lots of sugar during Easter. Could anyone resist all that chocolate going around? I think it was a good learning curve and I am up for another month of trying out this “sugar-free” diet, detox, quitting or what ever else you want to call it!

So here how it went… In the very beginning I was expecting cold turkey sort of stage. But no such thing happened, instead I got little bit of cold. Not sure if it was how my body was coping or just coincidence :-D. I mean, don’t get me wrong it was very hard to fight the temptation, but eventually I found the other foods to sweeten my life! Grapes are good for example and bananas of course. I tried making banana 2 ingredient pancakes that you see all over Pinterest (the other ingredient is egg), but I found it not very pancakey, instead it felt like sweet soufflé. At the end I added third ingredient which is flour, which made everything soooo much better. It would of course work with any other type of flour or oatmeal if you prefer.sweetened porridge with oats Then I discovered I could make sweet treats that are sugar free! I even created a board on Pinterest dedicated to raw treats, that are of course sugar free. My favourite are these chocolate energy bars that I made in different variations. Yum! Although I did feel sick few times after consuming too many…Sugar free chocolate energy bar Next, I realised I could introduce chocolate into my breakfast. This was getting suspiciously naughty! I was adding cocoa powder into my oats and sweeting it with dates. I felt like eating a cake for breakfast!Sugar free chocolate aots Few weeks ago I mentioned that I was quitting sugar to my sister. It turned out she was quitting it too!! We must be synchronised ;-). She did questioned my sugar substitutions as I was sipping on wine. Turns out that fruit contain sugar! I mean it’s natural, but still sugar!

During Easter I fell back even further… I got tempted by chocolate :(. At least I wasn’t alone. Nicola said she was having sugar days as well. Once it was over I was actually glad to resume as it made me pretty sick. So I guess it’s good, I can see sugar free March was working for me ;-)Oops!So what is my goal for April? Well, cut out all types of sugar. That includes fruits and wine! Eeeeek! Wish me luck! Will let you know next month how it went :-).

Temporary Easter wall decorations

Temporary Easter wall decorationsTemporary Easter wall decorations Last weekend we hosted Lukas dedication in our house which was stressful to begin with but we all enjoyed it at the end. I decorated walls with bird/leaves “garland” which has been inspired by this one. I really liked the outcome and I thought this could be suitable for Easter as well! Except the fresh leaves have already dried up :-(. But if you hosting Easter at your place, I think this is a fab idea ;-). Just make sure you decorate it the day before or on the day, because it last around 3 days depending on the leaves you are using. I think what would look even more amazing is using branches with about to pop leaf buds, which should last even longer!Temporary Easter wall decorationsBecause majority of our walls in the house are not decorated the way we want yet, I used stapler to attach the leaves. In your case you probably would not want to damage your walls, so I suggest using a tape? Or attach all the leaves on the string and tie the ends of that string on something that sticks out (such as nails perhaps?). Let me know if you come up with something else ;-). Temporary Easter wall decorations Temporary Easter wall decorations Temporary Easter wall decorations Once the leaves are up it is super easy to tie the hanging birds on them. I made the birds almost the same way as these!Temporary Easter wall decorations Temporary Easter wall decorations Temporary Easter wall decorationsHappy Easter everyone!

Our bedroom update: curtains

Basic curtain DIY Our bedroom has been painted last year, but we only have moved in from our spare room in February. What took us so long? The fact we did not have any curtains! I could not find the ones I liked, so I went trough make-your-own process instead. Which delayed our moving in date too many times! Anyways, I am really glad they are there and although it was a project on more challenging side (dealing with large amounts of fabric is not my thing I guess), I love the fabric I chose.

These are basic lined curtains that is good to know how to make. The instructions on how I made them are here ;-).Basic curtain DIY Basic curtain DIY Basic curtain DIYHave a lovely weekend everyone

Sugar free March

Hidden sugars in foodAnd where do I begin? My relationship with sugar is a life long! I don’t remember at what point I became addicted to it, but I blame my mum that, who often would have something sweet after each meal. Don’t get me wrong, in general I enjoy eating healthily, I always love side salads with my meals and I find healthy looking food quite appealing. However sugar is just getting in my way! I heard so many good testimonies about people who completely cut out sugar, but I never considered it was for me. Why? Well… I never believed I could survive without sugar! My passion is baking, how I would do that without tasting?

But something changed my mind last week. While chatting with other mums at one of the socials I go to I realised I was not alone!  You see I always thought that it’s ok to eat sweet things once in a while and that it’s not effective to completely quit. In reality I found quite opposite. Because once I have a slice of cake I immediately want another slice! I find that moderation does not work for everybody. After hearing another success story of quitting sugar I realised that moderation is not for addicts. I decided to first quit and then see if I can enjoy that piece of cake once in the while. This is where you are coming in to help me. Because I am writing about my plans openly here, therefore I feel accountable to you and I am more likely to succeed. What is in it for you? Well.. I will tell you my story in the end which hopefully will be an inspiration to you.

So what exactly will I be quitting? There are many types of sugar out there and I decided to quit even the most innocent types such as honey and my beloved agave nectar that I drizzle onto my breakfast oats. I also decided to no longer fool myself over organic chocolate, because it still has sugar!!! The only sweet things I may eat in my moments of desperation are fruits and maybe sugar free chocolate (that does exist thankfully!). My plan is to last for at least a month hence sugar free March ;-)Hidden sugars in foodWhich me luck!

Photography challenge: focusing on still life

Still life photographyWhile last month I was playing around with DSLR to find out what it can do, this month I decided to focus more on focus …basically trying to achieve focus in my pictures where I want it and in what depth I want it (not letting camera to decide for me automatically). This is why I thought practicing on still life photography would be a great way to learn this!

Last month I mentioned that I did try to find out what are the f-stops on the camera setting. Well, now I know! Those numbers represent the depth of field in the camera! The larger the number the bigger the depth. Because I wanted to learn to focus on specific areas in the picture I decided to go with the lowest f-stop (3.5f on the camera I used).

Now to focus on the specific object I learned that either you can point the camera lens centre at the object you want to (like the picture bellow) or…Still life photography: focus point in the centre on the green bottle…change the focus point on the camera settings (I am sure if you look at your camera manual you will find this term used somewhere). In the picture bellow I set the focus on the top of the frame. The camera instantly selected the background and you can see it is most focused dimension in this picture. Anything in front of the background is less focused!  Still life photography: focus point in the centre on the background Still life photography: focus point on the top of the picture, mostly covering the background I changed the focus point in my camera back to the centre and here you can see it focused on the brown leaves leaving anything behind (background) or in front in blur. Still life photography: focus on the brown leavesIn the picture bellow I used the same settings and focused on the same leaves, but because I placed the leaves arrangement further away from the background it made it (the background) even more blur. Still life photography: focus on the vase arrangementI hope you find this helpful ;-)

Year two with books: “Bringing Up Bébé” Review

My thoughts on "Bringing up bebe"This is the first book I read from my book list this year and I am glad I started with this particular one. It gave me lots of good ideas on how to deal with usual baby problems (sleeping for example) which is what I needed to cope with the first few months of bringing up Lukas. This parenting style (if you want to call that) appealed  to me a lot, it kind of agrees with “Baby whisperer” by Tracy Hogg. Except this book was much easer to read and so much more glamorous just because it is based on French parenting.

What I like about it? Is the story behind it that completely sold me the book. To say it quick it is about American mother discovering wisdom of French parenting, which seem so chic (if parenting can be chic). I also think the author is an amazing writer, she shared some personal experience which was quite amusing (and some are even very private). I liked that she applied the parenting wisdom she learned on her own kids and also did some scientific research to back it up. Have I tried any of these parenting tricks myself? Only one, how to get the baby sleep through the night. And I was surprised with the outcome to begin with. Although I got little scared how it effects Lukas feeding, because he is not gaining weight that easily. So now we are back to waking once a night and that is satisfactory to me and much better than the other babies I know around me. Or maybe I just have an easy baby? … Oh and another thing I love is that she drops a lot of French words into the story. Makes me want to learn some French myself!

What I did not like about it? “Non”, nothing at all!

Is it worth buying it? absolument oui!My thoughts on "Bringing up bebe"Thanks for letting me share my thoughts on this wonderful book!

Heart beet potion

Heart Beet Potion recipeLately we have been ill (me and Lukas, but not Joni). I mean we were not terribly sick, but had a lingering cold that we could not quite get rid off. My mum suggested drinking iron (apparently that improves blood therefore bugs don’t stick that much to it). She actually gave me a recipe for this drink that is packed with iron which contains some beetroot and alcohol. It kind of taste like a sweet liquor with earthy tones in it. I must admit I look forward to a shot of it everyday ;-). This is why I think this would make a perfect Valentine’s gift, because apparently beetroot has some natural aphrodisiac (well…apparently).

HEART BEET POTION

  • 1 cup grated raw beetroot
  • 1 cup grated raw carrot
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cup cognac
  • 1 cup lemon

Heart Beet Potion recipe 1. Place all ingredients into the jug and mix well. My mum says that it is ready for consumption straight away, but I prefer drinking it when it is without bits. Therefore I placed the jug into the fridge overnight and then sieved it the next day.Heart Beet Potion recipe Heart Beet Potion recipe Heart Beet Potion labels2. I poured it into the bottles (spirit bottles are the prettiest) and labeled for presentation. Pinterest challenge: raw berry burst cheesecake

Raw Berry Burst Cheesecake recipeWe called this a fake cheesecake as it actually has no cheese (or any other dairy)! But to my surprise it tasted very cheesecake like and they were quite addictive. I made them for friends get together and by the end of it it was all gone! I adjusted the recipe a little bit to make the process of making go quicker but you can’t skip soaking cashew nuts overnight (they become so creamy when pureed). So before you make them make sure to prepare for it the night before. Other than that I am already searching for another occasion to make them again ;-). Raw Berry Burst Cheesecake recipeRAW BERRY BURST CHEESECAKE adopted from Pure Ella

(for the base)

  • 100g walnuts
  • 110g raisins
  • 3 tbsp water

(for the middle layer)

  • 250g cashews
  • 120g extra virgin coconut oil (important to get a quality one for the taste)
  • 160ml agave nectar

(for the topping)

  • 260g mixed berries (I used frozen ones)

1. First, soak the cashews for 4 hours or more in the fridge, or overnight.

2. Make the base, middle layer and the topping. For each layer combine all ingredients and whizz them in the processor in separate bowls. Make sure you process middle layer really well so it comes out all creamy.  Raw Berry Burst Cheesecake recipe 3. Line the baking tin with grease paper and cover the bottom of it with the base layer. Follow it with middle layer and the topping.Raw Berry Burst Cheesecake recipe 4. Use the table spoon to smooth the top of the cheesecake. Photography challenge: playing around with camera settings in Shortstown

Photography challenge: playing around camera settings in Shortstown After failing to achieve my goal to take better pictures last year, I decided to really push myself and achieve it this year. And what is better way to achieve your goals than setting yourself a challenge and actually planning how you are going to make it happened? So there we are, I started my photography challenge already this month (11 months to go).

First step in my mind was to read through my camera manual. But oh dear I almost pulled all my hair out because of my frustration of not being able to understand any of it.  I think I recognised few terms in it such as “Aperture” and “Shutter Speed” which I had a vague idea what they actually mean… Eventually I decided to start a course which would guide me through this madness.

But for now I decided to play around with my camera settings and even see what the f stop means (ha ha… funny word!). At the same time I am also presenting you our town where we live now (while taking a walk with Lukas). Shortstown is a boring town with a lot of history and nothing much going on, let’s see what we can do to change it ;-). In the picture above here is Cardington twin sheds that are often used to film the movies (I know! Very glamorous!). I took this picture using a landscape setting (doh!). Next up in the picture bellow are some pretty hedge that I found on the foot path to my friends house. This was taken with a macro setting.Photography challenge: playing around camera settings in Shortstown This lovely greenery with the field beyond it is a good example of what it’s like to live in Shortstown. Lot’s of fields around where you are not allowed to walk. I set 9F for this shot.Photography challenge: playing around camera settings in ShortstownAnd here are my feet all looking fabulous in the Wellies that Joni got me. I used 3.5F to shoot this one (the lowest on my camera)Photography challenge: playing around camera settings in Shortstown And here is Lukas have fallen asleep from all this boredom. I think it’s time to go back home! It’s F3.5 stop again ;-).Photography challenge: playing around camera settings in ShortstownHope you feel inspired to take up a new challenge ;-)

Year two with books

Year two with books (my goals) Almost same time last year I made a goal to read six books in the year. And it worked magic! Not only that I achieved my last year’s goal but I also enjoyed the process too. This year I don’t have a goal to read more books, but I thought I should still set a list of titles I should look into. Here is my list that includes not only the novels:

1. “Bringing up Bebe” by Pamela Druckerman have been in my wish list on Pinterest for ages and I realised now it’s the best time to read it. I am on it now and I must admit I am impressed! Let’s see how I get on with the baby advice it gives ;-). Year two with books (my goals) 2. “French Kids Eat Everything” by Karen Le Billon is another book that have been on my wish list. Yes, it’s also french inspired and I can’t wait get my hands on it! Hopefully in time before I start weaning (so looking forward!).Year two with books (my goals): French Kids Eat Everything 3. “Riding Rockets” by Astronaut Mike Mullane have been spotted by Joni at Kennedy Space Center last year (yep, we are both space fanatics that dream to go to space). Let’s see who reads it first!Year two with books (my goals): Riding Rockets 4. “A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian” by Marina Lewycka is on my list because she is my favourite author of last year. I am expecting to lol when I am reading this book ;-).Year two with books (my goals): A short history of Tractors in Ukrainian 5. “According to Yes” by Dawn French is an obvious choice. I absolutely love her writing! This is going to be a third book I read that is written by her.Year two with books (my goals): according to Yes 6. “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel made it to the movies! Although I generally like to watch a movie after reading a book, this time I am doing it the other way round.Year two with books (my goals)Hope you found my book list inspiring this year. I will attempt to review them as last time in my own way (which may not be very professional, but definitely honest).

Make your own kids gardening kit

Make your own kids gardening kitAlthough we are in the middle of winter I already can’t wait till spring (I think I had enough of cold and rain). So making this seed growing kit for my nephew was quite uplifting :-). Hopefully he is now looking forward to spring as much as I do!

In the kit I included the beans for sowing (5.) and everything else that is needed to make it grow (minus the water). Some of the stuff I had to buy such as kiddy gardening tools (2.) and compressed soil (4.). However the other items were free, like these toilet roll pots (3.) and the box with the straw (1.) that I just upcycled!Bean stalk growing kit printableI decided to go with the beans because I thought it’s cool and it’s so easy to grow. It kind of goes along with Jack and The Beanstalk story! I thought it would make a very personal gift if I replaced Jack’s name to my nephew’s name.  Make your own kids gardening kit Make your own kids gardening kitI hope you found this simple gift idea inspiring
